Description
Gohonmatsu — the "Five Pine Trees" landmark on the Sumida's western bank — appears again in this variant of Kiyochika's recurrent rain-and-moonlight subject, the Japanese title 五本松雨月 (Gohan matsu ame tsuki) precisely labelling the atmospheric double effect. Rain falls diagonally across the frame while the moon's disc, visible through the downpour, casts diffuse light on the wet ground and dark river surface. The subject was among Kiyochika's most atmospheric achievements in combining precipitation and nocturnal luminosity.
