Rain falls in this undated nocturne, a generalised atmospheric study in the intersection of precipitation and darkness that Kiyochika explored repeatedly throughout his career. The absence of a specific location in the title places this among his more abstract atmospheric exercises — images that prioritise the sensory experience of weather over topographic documentation. Diagonal rain lines across a dark ground, with light sources — lanterns, reflections — breaking the darkness, was among the most demanding technical challenges in the nishiki-e medium.
