Description
Okura Bridge at Honjo — a span over one of the canal-and-drainage waterways that threaded through this eastern Tokyo district — is depicted in this undated print with the characteristic low viewpoint and horizontal composition of Kiyochika's bridge subjects. Honjo, across the Sumida from central Edo, was a dense working-class district of workshops, warehouses, and lumber yards; its bridges were functional infrastructure rather than scenic landmarks, and Kiyochika's treatment gives even this modest crossing atmospheric dignity.
