Description
A related or earlier version of the Yabakei gorge subject, this undated print depicts the Old Rakan Temple in its cliff-face setting in Bungo Province using the "Yamakei" reading of the gorge name. The composition emphasises the dramatic contrast between the sheer rock face and the wooded valley below, with the small temple structure providing the human scale that makes the geological scale legible. The Famous Sights of Japan series found in sites like this the extremes of natural scenery that Tokyo cityscapes could not provide.
