Description
Japanese field artillery bombards the Qing camp at Jiuliancheng (Jiulian Castle) near the Yalu River crossing in this November 1894 nishiki-e. Jiuliancheng, on the Chinese side of the Yalu, fell in October 1894 after Japan's decisive crossing that extended the war into Manchuria. Kiyochika renders the artillery engagement with the dense smoke and muzzle flash that characterise his war compositions, the landscape of the Chinese bank providing an exotic backdrop that distinguished Manchurian subjects from the Korean scenes of the war's earlier phase.
