The Yellow Sea naval battle of September 1894 — the largest fleet action of the First Sino-Japanese War — is depicted in this 1894 triptych as Japanese warships pour fire into the Beiyang Fleet. The engagement, fought over five hours, resulted in the destruction of eight Qing warships and the effective elimination of Chinese naval power in the Yellow Sea. Kiyochika renders the carnage across all three triptych sheets: exploding ships, columns of black smoke, and the ordered battle line of the victorious Japanese fleet.
