Description
Japanese scouts reconnoitre Qing positions near the Yalu River in this undated print, likely a related or variant version of the October 1894 dated nishiki-e on the same subject. The scouts move through autumn landscape toward the river crossing that would mark Japan's expansion of the war from Korea into Manchuria — the Yalu being both a geographical boundary and a political threshold. Kiyochika's intelligence-gathering compositions brought a quieter, more cinematic tension to the war imagery than his full-scale battle triptychs.
