Description
A closely related variant to companion prints depicting the Rongcheng Bay landings of January 1895, this triptych emphasizes the seizure of the bay itself—the moment of occupation—rather than the logistics of disembarkation. The Japanese title—Waga gun Eijôwan o senryô shi jôriku suru no zu—stresses both the territorial act of seizure (senryô) and the landing (jôriku). Kiyochika may differentiate this composition from companion prints through the inclusion of shore fortifications, a raised flag marking the occupied position, or a shift in vantage point that shows the bay from a commanding height. The production of multiple variant prints depicting the same engagement was standard practice in Meiji war reportage, allowing publishers to meet consumer demand while giving artists latitude to explore different aspects of the same event.
