Japanese troops land on Taiwan by night in this February 1895 nishiki-e, the darkness lit only by lanterns on the transport vessels and the distant glow of Taiwanese shore fires. The nocturnal landing was a tactical necessity — avoiding daylight exposure to any remaining Chinese defences — and gave Kiyochika one of his most dramatically atmospheric war subjects. The Taiwan campaign began immediately after the Treaty of Shimonoseki ceded the island to Japan, and the night landing print was among the first to reach Tokyo buyers.
