Description
Japanese scouts approach Qing positions near the Yalu River in this October 1894 nishiki-e, its companion to the other Yalu reconnaissance prints Kiyochika produced as Japan prepared to cross from Korea into Manchuria. The scouts move in small groups through terrain that transitions from Korea's hills to the flat bottomland of the Yalu's Chinese bank. The intelligence operations preceding the Yalu crossing of October 1894 were among the war's most consequential planning decisions, and Kiyochika gave them unusual attention.
