Description

Saegusa Bridge in Hakone is depicted here under rainfall conditions, continuing Kiyochika's examination of mountain landscapes through his kōsen-ga technique. The bridge, likely a modest wooden or stone structure spanning a mountain stream, is rendered in the context of rain-heavy atmosphere where visibility contracts and tonal values compress. Kiyochika would have exploited the bokashi technique to suggest the diffused light filtering through rain clouds over the Hakone mountains, with the stream below reflecting whatever pale illumination penetrates the overcast. As with other prints in his Hakone set, the absence of electrical or gas lighting — central to many of his Tokyo compositions — shifts the light source to ambient daylight filtered through precipitation, testing the kōsen-ga approach in a purely natural register. The resulting image likely emphasizes wet foliage, the sound-suggesting quality of rain on water, and the dramatic verticality of mountain terrain.
