Yanagiwara — the willow-lined embankment along the Kanda River north of Akihabara — is shown on a rainy night in this 1881 nishiki-e, the famous weeping willows that gave the district its name ('willow field') dripping in the lantern light reflected on the wet cobblestones and canal surface. The Yanagiwara willow embankment was one of the most atmospheric of Tokyo's urban streetscapes, and Kiyochika's nocturnal rain version captures the melancholy beauty that made it a favourite literary and pictorial subject throughout the Edo and Meiji periods.
