The martyred peasant leader Sōgō Kōemon — who presented a direct appeal to the Tokugawa shogun on behalf of his famine-stricken village in the 1640s and was executed for bypassing official channels — is shown at the Asakusa ferry landing in this 1884 Meiji 17 nishiki-e. Sōgō became one of the most celebrated figures of Edo-period popular legend, celebrated as a selfless advocate for the common people. Kiyochika's treatment as an "authentic view" (jitsu no zu) suggests a claim to historical accuracy in the composition's setting.
