Description

Yorozuyo Bridge — also known as Mansei Bridge, rebuilt in stone in 1877 across the Kanda River — is shown here at sunrise in this 1880 nishiki-e companion to Kiyochika's earlier sunrise composition at the same site. The stone bridge catches the horizontal light of early morning, its reflection in the Kanda River below doubling the geometric structure against the water. The site was close to the Akihabara area (then a vegetable market), and Kiyochika's dawn treatment captures the bridge in the early-morning quiet before the commercial districts of central Tokyo came alive.
