Description
A second printing or variant edition of Kiyochika's 綾瀬川の夕 (Ayasegawa no Sekiyo), this composition depicts the Ayase River — a distributary of the Sumida flowing through the Adachi and Katsushika districts east of Tokyo — at sunset. Subtle differences in color registration, bokashi gradation, or block wear distinguish variant states of Kiyochika's prints; this version may show a warmer or cooler palette depending on the particular printing run. The Ayase was a quieter, more rural waterway than the Sumida, and Kiyochika likely emphasized the stillness of the water reflecting the last light of day. Reeds, marsh grasses, or fishing boats in the middle distance are probable compositional elements consistent with the genre of river-sunset prints.
