Description
A samurai in armor and a lacquered helmet sits cross-legged beneath a gnarled, blossoming cherry tree at night, its trunk and pale flowers lit against a dark sky. The triptych's outer panels extend the nocturnal landscape—rocky ground and a still expanse of water on the right, more twisted branches on the left—rendered mostly in deep indigo-blacks with the white cherry blossoms as the main highlight. "Taira No Tadanori Under the Cherry Tree," by Kobayashi Kiyochika, 1884, ink on paper.
