Description
A variant composition of the Mannenbashi bridge at Sokokura hot spring in Hakone, this print likely differs from its companion in season, time of day, or colorway. Kiyochika occasionally produced multiple takes on a single site to capture shifting atmospheric conditions — a practice indebted to his study of Western plein-air observational principles. Where one version may emphasize daytime clarity, this interpretation possibly shifts toward dusk or overcast conditions, using cooler pigments and compressed tonal range to convey the thermal mist characteristic of the Sokokura valley. The Hakone hot spring region was a well-traveled destination by the Meiji period, and Kiyochika's treatment elevates topographic documentation into atmospheric study, subordinating the architectural subject to questions of light and moisture in the mountain air.
