Description

This sensō-e (war reportage print) commemorates the Japanese capture of Jinzhou fortress during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95), depicting the assault on the Yonganmen, one of the fortified gates of the Chinese stronghold. The print singles out Superior Private Onoguchi Tokuji for individual heroism, a common convention in Meiji-era battle prints that elevated ordinary soldiers to exemplars of martial valor. Kiyochika's characteristic use of dramatic light and shadow differentiates the work from earlier, more schematic battle imagery: smoke from cannon fire and muzzle flashes would have been rendered with the atmospheric depth that distinguished his approach. The format almost certainly follows the large-format oban triptych convention typical of his war series, with the gate's architecture providing compositional structure against the chaos of the assault. The romanized title alongside the Japanese subtitle reflects the dual-audience publication practice common during the war.
