Description

This meisho-e with the title 天王寺下衣川 (Koromogawa below Tennoji) places the viewer along the banks of a river flowing beneath one of Japan's most ancient temple complexes. Tennoji, established by Prince Shotoku in the early seventh century, overlooks the Koromogawa in the southern part of what is now Osaka. Kiyochika's rendering of the scene likely draws on the compositional conventions of his Tokyo river views while adapting them to a site with stronger historical associations. His atmospheric approach — diffuse light, carefully graded sky, and the play of reflection on water — suited subjects where mood and setting carried more weight than topographic accuracy. The print belongs to a group of related impressions documenting this same subject, and may differ from the companion piece in pigment quality, impression sharpness, or minor compositional adjustments between print runs. Kiyochika's Osaka subjects are less extensively studied than his Tokyo work.
