Description

Bearing the Japanese title 天王寺下衣川 (Tennoji shita Koromogawa, 'Koromogawa below Tennoji'), this print depicts the river flowing through the historic temple district of what is now Osaka. The Koromogawa had practical and ceremonial significance in the Tennoji area, and its banks would have offered Kiyochika the kind of transitional urban-natural landscape he favored — where human habitation meets water and open sky. His treatment of riverscapes consistently demonstrates sensitivity to reflected light and the behavior of water under different atmospheric conditions, techniques informed by his exposure to Western landscape painting. This appears to be one of multiple impressions or editions of the same composition, distinguished by the numeral in the slug. Variations between impressions in the same series could reflect different print runs, different pigment mixtures, or different degrees of bokashi application. The oban format would have been standard for this type of landscape subject.
