Description

Among Kiyochika's multiple Sumida River nocturnes, this oban-format print — the Japanese title 隅田川夜 (Sumidagawa Yo, 'Sumida River Night') making the subject explicit — represents his ongoing investigation of reflected light on moving water. Each treatment of this subject differs in season, vantage point, and light source, demonstrating that Kiyochika approached the river not as a fixed topographic reference but as a variable field for the study of illumination. The Sumida at night offered darkness as a compositional element: the black river absorbs and distorts the lights of the opposite bank, creating the broken reflections and tonal complexity his technique was particularly suited to render. Graduated bokashi printing in the sky plane, ranging from deep indigo or black at the zenith through blue-gray toward the horizon, frames the warmer tones of lantern or gaslight lower in the composition. Boats and low riparian structures ground the scene in recognizable Meiji-era Tokyo.
