Description

This meisho-e depicts the Kinryuzan hall of Sensoji temple at Asakusa as seen from the western bank of the Sumida River on a winter night. Kiyochika employs his characteristic kosen-ga technique, rendering the cold moonlight as it falls across the river's surface while the distant temple complex emerges from darkness. The winter atmosphere is conveyed through spare, icy tones achieved with delicate bokashi gradations in the sky. Snow-dusted embankments frame the composition, and the stillness of the river surface reflects the lunar light in a manner derived from Kiyochika's study of Western oil painting. The print belongs to his celebrated series documenting the changing face of Meiji-era Tokyo, balancing Edo cultural landmarks with a distinctly modern sensibility toward atmospheric illumination.
