Description

This nocturnal winter view depicts the Kinryuzan — the 'Golden Dragon Mountain,' the formal name of the Senso-ji temple complex in Asakusa — as seen across the Sumida River from the western embankment. The title 墨堤より望む金龍山 冬の月 (Bokurei yori nozomu Kinryuzan, Fuyu no Tsuki) translates as 'Kinryuzan Viewed from the Sumida Embankment, Winter Moon,' placing the composition squarely within the meisho-e tradition of famous-place views while centering on a nocturnal light effect. Winter in Kiyochika's kosen-ga prints typically brings clear skies and the cold, sharp moonlight that renders distant architectural forms with particular clarity. The pagoda or gate structures of Senso-ji, silhouetted or faintly illuminated across the water, would appear in sharp contrast to the dark river and the pale bokashi-graduated sky. The moon's reflection breaking across the Sumida's surface is a compositional device Kiyochika returned to repeatedly, each iteration testing a slightly different balance of reflection, shadow, and atmospheric haze.
