Hashiba, a landing spot on the eastern bank of the Sumida River near the Hyōtan-ike pond, is captured at the liminal hour of twilight when daylight bleeds from the sky and the first lanterns appear along the riverbank. Kiyochika renders the gradation from deep orange at the horizon to indigo overhead with the tonal sensitivity he developed from studying Western atmospheric painting. Moored ferry boats and the silhouettes of pine trees complete a composition that turns a workaday river crossing into a meditative landscape.
