Description
The Japanese title 従箱根山中冨嶽眺望 translates as View of Mount Fuji from Within the Hakone Mountains, identifying this as one of Kiyochika's compositions depicting the volcano from the forested interior of the Hakone range. The Hakone mountains, occupying the old Tōkaidō route between Tokyo and the west, offered elevated vantage points from which Fuji appeared across intervening ridges and valleys. Kiyochika would have employed layered color blocks to render the deep greens and blue-grays of the mountain terrain, with graduated bokashi washes building atmospheric recession toward the pale, snow-capped summit. The foreground likely includes stands of conifers or deciduous trees establishing a sense of depth through overlapping planes, while mist or cloud partially obscures the mid-ground ridgeline. Multiple Kiyochika prints share this title, suggesting he explored the motif across different editions; this version represents a specific compositional arrangement of foreground vegetation, atmospheric haze, and the distant cone of Fuji.
