Description
Sharing the title 従箱根山中冨嶽眺望 with a closely related composition, this second version of Kiyochika's view from the Hakone interior may represent a different edition, a variant colorway of the same blocks, or a distinct compositional interpretation of the same subject. Differences between closely related Kiyochika prints of the same meisho frequently appear in the treatment of sky—the depth of graded blue, the presence of cloud or mist—and in the intensity of atmospheric haze separating the viewer from the distant summit. Minor adjustments to foreground elements, the silhouette of intervening ridges, or the disposition of figures on a mountain path would further distinguish this impression from its companion. The Hakone region's combination of dense forest, volcanic terrain, and the distant white cone of Fuji offered a subject that rewarded revisitation, and Kiyochika's willingness to produce multiple versions reflects both the commercial appeal of Fuji subjects and his sustained interest in atmospheric variation.
