Description
Takinogawa — the "Waterfall River" district in Kita, north of Tokyo proper — was named for a cascade on the Shakujii River and was famous for its maple-viewing in autumn. This 1878 nishiki-e depicts the valley landscape through which the stream flows, the forested banks and rocky streambed rendered with an attention to natural topography that places it among Kiyochika's excursions to the scenic hills and valleys on Tokyo's northern fringe. The autumn-associated district gave him a landscape subject of a different character from the flat river margins of the Sumida.
