Description

The ground battery at Weihaiwei — shore fortifications protecting the Beiyang Fleet's anchorage — is shown under Japanese attack in this February 1895 nishiki-e. The assault on the shore batteries complemented the Japanese naval blockade that trapped the remaining Chinese warships in the harbour, and Kiyochika's "landscape" treatment of the subject emphasises the terrain over which the assault was conducted: the coastal hills, the beach approaches, and the fortress walls. The print documents the combined arms character of the Weihaiwei operation.
