Description
The third design in Shoda's Lake Biwa series continues the exploration of Japan's largest lake through the lens of the Eight Views tradition. This print may emphasize a seasonal element — autumn foliage on the Hiei range, or early morning mist rising from the water — or a time-of-day contrast distinct from the other compositions in the set. Shore elements such as reed beds, fishing boats, or the distant profile of Chikubushima island would provide compositional anchoring while the expanse of water and sky allowed Shoda to demonstrate the nuanced [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations and muted palette that characterize his landscape work. The recurrence of Lake Biwa across multiple prints in the series attests to the site's continued hold on the artistic imagination well into the Taisho and early Showa periods.
