Description
A fifth view in the Lake Biwa series, this print may depict the lake under nocturnal or twilight conditions — subjects that aligned with Shoda's known interest in atmospheric nocturnes featuring moonlight over water. A moon reflected in the lake's surface, its light breaking into shimmers across low waves, would have called for careful management of the dark ground color and the reserved white or pale areas that represent light on water. The Omi Eight Views included 'Autumn Moon at Ishiyama,' one of the most reproduced subjects in the entire tradition. Shoda's handling of darkness and reflected light, refined through his herons-in-moonlit-shallows [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) compositions, would translate directly to this type of lakeside nocturne.
