Description
The sixth and final identified print in Shoda's Lake Biwa series likely serves a compositional or seasonal role distinct from the companion sheets, completing a set that surveys the lake across different conditions. It may depict a winter scene — snow on the Hira range above the western shore, or ice forming along the reed-bordered shallows — providing seasonal closure to the series. Alternatively, this sheet may concentrate on a specific landmark such as the torii gate of Shirahige Shrine, which stands partially submerged in the lake's northern reach. Across the full Lake Biwa series, Shoda applied the disciplined observation of his [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) work to the challenge of sustained landscape investigation, producing a body of prints that reflect both the Eight Views literary tradition and the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) movement's renewed interest in Japanese topography.
