Description
This kacho-e (bird-and-flower print) depicts a pair of mandarin ducks (oshidori) resting among snow-laden bamboo, a subject with deep resonance in Japanese art where oshidori are a traditional symbol of conjugal fidelity. Maeda likely renders the ducks with close attention to their distinctive plumage — the male's chestnut sail feathers and vermillion bill contrasting against a muted winter ground. The bamboo stalks bend under accumulated snow, their forms simplified into clean vertical lines that frame the composition. Mokuhanga techniques would allow for delicate gradation in the white snow through selective bokashi, and the dense, flat blacks of the bamboo leaves would be achieved through multiple ink passes on washi. The cold stillness typical of Japanese winter prints is reinforced by the restrained palette, in which color is concentrated in the birds rather than the landscape surroundings.
