Description
Hiyoshi Mamoru — likely referring to a figure or site associated with the Hiyoshi Taisha shrine complex at the foot of Mount Hiei — provides Kotozuka with a subject rooted in the ancient religious landscape surrounding Kyoto. The Hiyoshi shrines are among the oldest in Japan, their forested setting and the sacred significance of the mountain above them giving any landscape or figure associated with the site a particular gravitas. Kotozuka's treatment dates from the 1950s, his mature period of Kansai landscape production.
