Description
Dated 1928, Lake Chuzenji in autumn is one of Kotozuka's earliest dated works — a remarkably assured print for an artist then in his early twenties. The lake at Nikko, perched high above the surrounding plains and surrounded by steep forested mountains, is famous for its autumn foliage, the maples and deciduous trees of the slopes reflected in the lake's still surface. The 中禅寺湖 title signals the site's specific sacred identity — Chuzenji Temple stands at the lake's edge, linked to Nikko's ancient pilgrimage tradition.
