Nigatsu-do (二月堂, the Hall of the Second Month) at Nara's Todaiji Temple — the hall perched on the hillside above the Great Buddha's enclosure, famous for the Omizutori ceremony held each March — in spring presents a moonlit scene of extraordinary atmosphere. Kotozuka's print combines the hall's elevated position (from which one can see across the Nara Plain to the mountains beyond) with the spring moonlight that has made Nigatsu-do's promontory one of the great vantage points in classical Japanese poetry.
