$200–$2,000. Common Kyoto views: $200–$500. Key value factors: Kotozuka's Kyoto prints are popular and affordable. Seasonal temple scenes and garden views are most sought after.
Osaka Castle — the massive Momoyama-era fortress reconstructed in concrete in 1931 on its original stone base — dominates the flat landscape of central Osaka with a combination of historical authority and visual grandeur. Kotozuka's depiction of this famous castle, dating from around 1950–1970, shows his engagement with landmark architecture outside Kyoto and Nara, the castle's layered white-walled towers and gold ornamentation providing a subject quite different from the Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines he more typically depicted.
Curated cross-cuts that include this print.
Osaka Castle was created by Kotozuka Eiichi (琴塚英一) in circa 1950-1970.
