Description
Takao in autumn — the Takao area in the mountains northwest of Kyoto, famous for the brilliant autumn foliage of its three valleys (Takao, Makino-o, and Togano-o) and the temples nestled within them — is one of the great autumn landscape subjects of the Kyoto tradition. Jingoji Temple and Kosanji Temple stand at Takao, surrounded by maples that turn brilliant red in November; the combination of ancient Buddhist architecture and autumn foliage creates one of the most celebrated seasonal views in Japan. Kotozuka's print captures this moment at its chromatic peak.
