Description
Thunder over farming land — the dark, charged sky of a summer storm approaching over open paddy fields or cultivated terraces — presents Kotozuka with an unusual atmospheric subject of raw natural power. The farming landscape of Japan, with its open exposure and its dependence on summer rains, is particularly subject to the dramatic confrontations of summer thunderstorms, and the Japanese tradition includes landscape images of storms building over fields. Kotozuka's treatment of this scene would balance the darkness of the storm-sky against the greens of the agricultural landscape below.
