Description
View of Montmartre (Monmarutoru fukei) is a woodblock print depicting the famous Parisian hilltop neighborhood, a subject that places Maeda Toshiro in the tradition of Japanese artists who traveled to Europe and rendered Western landmarks through Eastern printmaking techniques. Montmartre's winding streets, the white dome of Sacre-Coeur, and the neighborhood's bohemian atmosphere have attracted artists for over a century. Maeda's woodblock translates this quintessentially French scene into carved wood and water-based pigments, the Japanese medium giving Paris a different visual texture than oil painting or photography. The print documents both a place and a cultural exchange, East meeting West on a sheet of paper.
