$500–$4,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Maekawa's early sosaku-hanga works are historically significant. Bold, expressive prints are most valued.
An evening moon rises as a young horse stands in a field in this 1955 Senpan print, the foal's alert, slightly nervous presence and the moon's calm luminosity creating a composition of charming contrast between youthful energy and celestial equanimity. Senpan's occasional animal subjects reveal the warmth and observational precision he brought to the human figures in his festival and outdoor prints: the foal is depicted as a specific creature with its own physical presence and character, not as a symbol or a decorative element.
