Description
An inlet in Hokkaido — the northernmost major island of Japan, its coastline dramatically different from the warmer seas of Honshu, its water colder and its skies more changeable — is Senpan's subject in this undated print. Senpan traveled extensively within Japan, and his Hokkaido landscapes reflect the particular quality of the northern island's light and landscape: starker, more elemental, less softened by the cultural associations that surrounded the more famous landscapes of central Japan. The inlet setting, sheltered from the open sea, concentrates this quality.
