Description
A lake in winter — its surface frozen or dark and still, the surrounding landscape bare and cold — is Senpan's subject in this early twentieth-century print, the season's severity rendered with the direct, unromantic approach that characterizes his best landscape work. Senpan's winter lake compositions have a different quality than his summer outdoor scenes — where the summer prints vibrate with human energy and natural abundance, the winter lake is quiet, self-contained, and slightly austere, the landscape turned inward like a person deep in thought.
