Description
A mountain road winds through a landscape in this early twentieth-century Senpan print, the path as subject allowing him to explore the experience of moving through terrain rather than the static observation of a fixed viewpoint. Mountain roads in Senpan's work carry the feeling of actual travel — the slight uncertainty of the path ahead, the way the landscape reveals itself incrementally as the walker rounds each bend — and they connect the formal landscape print to the bodily experience of moving through Japan's varied topography.
