Description

A foal stands beneath an evening moon in this quietly observed animal study. Senpan renders the young horse with the economy of line and warmth of feeling characteristic of his sosaku-hanga practice—every block cut and printed by the artist himself, from design through impression. The moon likely appears as a pale disc against a night sky achieved through careful bokashi gradation, the indigo-to-black tonal progression bleeding softly across the background. The foal's posture—turned toward or away from the light—suggests an unguarded moment rather than a posed subject. Animal subjects recur across Senpan's career as vehicles for his characteristic directness and humor. The pairing of moon and young animal draws on the broader Japanese aesthetic tradition of seasonal imagery while remaining grounded in the artist's personal, observational mode rather than the decorative conventions of classical kacho-e or the commercial shin-hanga tradition.
