Description
Lake Tōya in southwestern Hokkaido is a near-circular caldera lake with a central island cluster (Nakajima) and, on clear days, the conical silhouette of Mount Yōtei visible across the water. Senpan made extended journeys through Hokkaido, recording northern landscapes with the same directness he brought to figure subjects. A print of Tōya-ko would likely emphasize the broad horizontal expanse of the water, the low silhouetted shoreline, and the quality of northern light—cooler and more diffuse than the light of Honshu. Bokashi gradations across sky and water surface are the central technical challenge of open-lake compositions, requiring multiple blended inkings on dampened washi to achieve smooth tonal transitions. The volcanic island group provides a focal element without interrupting the composition's sense of calm scale. Regional specificity—printing a named lake rather than a generic body of water—was valued within sosaku-hanga as evidence of direct observation rather than pictorial convention.
