$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Maekawa's early sosaku-hanga works are historically significant. Bold, expressive prints are most valued.
A preparatory sketch for the woodblock print "View of Mount Bandai" — made around 1941 in watercolor and pencil — captures the mountain and its surrounding landscape in the more immediate, exploratory medium that preceded the more labor-intensive woodblock version. The sketch's medium allows for a freedom of observation and a directness of mark-making that the woodblock could not replicate, and in some respects the sketch communicates the mountain's character more immediately than the finished print. This work is both a document of Senpan's process and a significant work in its own right.
