Description
Boaters on a mountain lake — the specific pleasure of rowing or paddling on an alpine or upland body of water, the surrounding mountains providing both scenic backdrop and the sense of being enclosed within a landscape of considerable scale — is Senpan's subject in this mid-twentieth-century print. The combination of water, small human figures, and encompassing mountain scenery creates one of his most spacious outdoor compositions, the figures' recreational activity giving scale to the surrounding landscape and grounding the natural scene in human pleasure.
