Dated 1963, "63 - B" is an early example of Maki Haku's embossed woodblock technique — ink and color applied to paper that has been pressed through relief-cut blocks to create raised surface texture. The embossing gives the print a sculptural presence unique in the woodblock medium: forms catch light differently depending on the angle of view, the print changing character as the viewer moves. The "B" variant suggests he was already systematically exploring multiple states of a single composition.
