by Maki Haku
"Emanation-7" belongs to one of Maki Haku's long-running abstract series in which radiant energy — light diffusing outward, forms dissolving at their edges — becomes the primary visual subject. Printed in a limited edition of 15 from 30, the work demonstrates his mastery of color woodblock technique applied to non-representational ends: pigments build up in carefully controlled layers, creating luminous depth that photographs struggle to capture. The numbered series format allowed him to pursue a single formal idea across multiple iterations, each print slightly different in pressure and ink saturation.
