"Heap - 100" from 1960 is one of Maki Haku's most explicit engagements with accumulation as both subject and method. The "Heap" series presents stacked, layered, or massed forms — things piled up, bearing weight, resting in unstable equilibrium. The number 100 points to a large series, and the 1960 date places this in an early productive period when he was developing his mature formal vocabulary. The ink-and-color-on-paper technique suggests this predates his most heavily embossed works.
